Manhattan College was founded in 1853 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a Catholic teaching order started by Saint John Baptist de La Salle. In 2019, Money magazine ranked Manhattan as the top "transformative" school in the nation in a study that took into account earnings and graduation rates to determine which schools help students succeed professionally.

The school competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) at the Division 1 level. It fields 19 athletic teams for men and woman including basketball, golf, softball and rowing. Historically, the track and field programme have the richest history amassing 31 of a possible 32 MAAC Indoor/Outdoor Track titles.
